Wellth 14-Day Detox: FAQ
What is detoxing?
The word “detoxing” is a buzzword being thrown around a lot recently, so it can get a bit confusing to have a good sense of what it means. In a nutshell, detoxing is the process of neutralizing toxins and eliminating waste products from our bodies.
So why detox?
While our liver and kidneys, along with other organs, work to detoxify our systems every day to keep us alive, this process can get impeded by ingesting an excess of things that need filtering, while not being able to neutralize or eliminate them quickly enough.
What sorts of things impede our bodies’ ability to detox?
Obvious substances that can hinder our bodies’ natural detox pathways are pesticides (think non-organic produce), alcohol, synthetic hormones (birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, etc.), cigarettes, pollution, and drugs of any kind (prescription, over the counter, and recreational). Lack of sleep and stress both will interfere with this process further, and can contribute to inflammation, impaired digestion, and other issues that will increase unwanted waste products, lessening our capacity for effective elimination.
How would I know that I need to detox?
It’s not always super obvious to us at first glance- the liver, kidneys, and digestive tract are tucked away in our bodies, and it can be difficult at times to discern how they’re working. Our bodies will give us hints though in the form of symptoms- weight gain, feelings of lethargy and sluggishness, bloating and indigestion, symptoms of PMS for women, constantly getting sick, and common skin issues such as acne, eczema, etc., are some of the vague symptoms that pop up when our system is out of balance, bogged down, and no longer effectively doing its job at removing waste products. When your system is working properly, you will feel more energetic and vibrant, less run-down, less bloated, and glowing from the inside out.
What can I expect to eat on a detox?
We’re not here to starve you! Detoxification does not need to equate with deprivation or extreme restriction. You can easily and safely detox by supporting your body with the proper minerals and vitamins from whole foods (foods that have been minimally processed). Removing common allergens and foods that typically cause people inflammation will reduce the overall burden on your system, so expect to ditch wheat, dairy, soy, sugar, alcohol, and limit your caffeine intake, all while filling up on nutrient dense, fresh foods. Don’t worry… our recipes are delicious, and you can always add these foods back in once your 14 days are up, however I don’t think you’ll want to after you see how good you feel without them! Targeted supplementation will speed this process along, but is completely optional, as food will be our focus. Practical lifestyle adjustments will also be given so that you can get the most out of your dietary changes, and reap the rewards of both a healthy body and mind.
How should I expect to feel on a detox?
Most people report feeling light, energetic, and clear-headed during a detox. Removing toxins and stressors from our food is an easy and gentle way to give your system a break, without straining it too intensely all at once, like some more extreme cleanses can do. The way we’ve set up our program is to ensure that the detoxification process is safe, effective, and comfortable. This is the foundation to a healthy lifestyle, not a fad diet.
